Let There Be Light: Finishing My Boho Room

Updated: Apr 15

If I wanted to create a boho room quickly, I would probably get everything from the Opalhouse Jungalow collection by Justina Blakeney and call it a day but that would just be too easy and impersonal (and expensive). I grab inspiration from everywhere, especially restaurants and clothing stores. Sometimes I walk in a restaurant and say, "I want to live here!" Aritzia and Nando's PERi PERi have a natural vibe much like the one I am going for in my bedroom. In particular, I like all the woven textures and wood. I've even seen a cool vertical slat wall in Chipotle that I would love as my own accent wall feature. With that in mind, I ventured through the aisles of my favorite local retail stores, taking pictures of all the things that fit that aesthetic. The first stores I visited were Tuesday Morning, World Market, At Home and Big Lots. Here are some snapshots of shopping inspirations:

I started to work out a plan of all the things I want in the room that can actually fit. I had space for the basics of a queen-sized bed, nightstand and media console, but I also wanted to work in a small seating area and vanity area. I picked out a gorgeous pendant light from World Market and linen curtains from Tuesday Morning during my shopping day.

Quick Tip: Take advantage of World Market discounts by becoming a member for free!

I stalked the online auctions for a nightstand and won the perfect mid-tone wood nightstand for an amazing $44 deal. This wood-tone became the basis for all of the other wood that went into the room down to the wall outlet covers. Home Depot sells natural wood finish outlet covers that you can stain and the Minwax Colonial Maple stain from Lowe's matched the nightstand color so well! Besides staining outlet covers, I had to put in some manual labor and paint the much dreaded ceiling, doors and baseboards.

After that, I have been adding in decor little by little. I do have to admit that I did get two Jungalow items but I had a good mix of items from Facebook Marketplace, auctions, At Home and online retailers like Woven Nook and Nathan James.
